Five great reasons to dine out

Delicious options make it obvious

If you need convincing to get out of your hotel and explore the dining options in Nassau, here are five great reasons: the freshest seafood - just taken from the ocean, native cuisine that's a treat to discover, oceanfront dining of the most romantic kind, exotic foreign dishes from around the world, and top chefs creating fine cuisine at first-class restaurants.

Just plucked from the sea
The freshest seafood can be found at Nassau's top restaurants. Just step into The Poop Deck, with two locations, one on East Bay Street and one just west of Cable Beach, and you're faced with a display of just-caught fish from which to choose your dinner. Columbus Tavern, on Paradise Island, also offers fresh fish, just plucked from the sea. All three restaurants feature water views, so you can see where your dinner came from.

And if you really want it fresh, stop into Arawak Cay, where a conch is pulled from the shell and chopped up into a conch salad, or scored and dressed with lime, for you to eat right there and then. Is there anything fresher?

You might also want to sample the ample Bahamian fare at Travellers' Rest out west, or at Sailor's Choice right on the harbour. For real down-home native fare, try the spots at Arawak Cay, such as Twin Brothers, which also has an outlet on Boyd Road in Chippingham.

Goombay Mama in the Wyndham Nassau, Cafe Johnny Canoe at the Nassau Beach Hotel and Kafe Kalik beside SuperClubs Breezes, are also among dining spots featuring authentic down-home cuisine.

Broader Caribbean fare, including Bahamian and Jamaican choices, are available at Anthony's Caribbean Grill on Paradise Island.

For fine dining on Bahamian and Continental dishes, the upscale Buena Vista, Blue Lagoon Seafood Restaurant at Club Land'Or and Montagu Gardens are all worth trying. All feature piano music to accompany your meal and each has its own elegant and classic ambience.

Foreign dishes
Once you've had your fill of fresh Bahamian seafood, and authentic native dishes, you may wish to do a bit of exploring. Many of the ethnic restaurants have been favourites for years. You can literally dine around the world on Paradise Island and New Providence.

For a taste of "down under," visit the Outback in the Island Traders Building on East Bay Street, where upside-down maps, boomerangs and flags tell you that you're not in Nassau anymore.

Relatively new to Nassau is a Brazilian dining option. Humidor Churrascaria, beside Graycliff on West Hill Street, offers a traditional Brazilian feast of meats served by roving waiters.

For classic French and Continental dining, Graycliff, Provence at Sandyport, Sun and..., the newly opened Cafe Martinique and Chez Willie exude European ambience. If you're looking for romance, any of these four upscale restaurants can provide it. You can dine in a romantic courtyard or around a pool, overlooking a canal or in old-world splendour. And the food is first rate.

If you crave Italian, the choices are broad. Cafe Matisse on Bank Lane has long been a favourite spot of both visitors and locals craving authentic Italian cuisine with top-notch service.

Capriccio Ristorante at Cable Beach has an intimate atmosphere and a varied menu of delicious pastas and meat dishes. Ristorante Villaggio at Caves Village sets the standard for fine Italian dining in the west, with beautiful contemporary decor and top cuisine. Sole Mare in the Wyndham Nassau Resort at Cable Beach serves authentic Italian food by candlelight and Luciano's of Chicago on East Bay Street is a hot spot for great Italian food. Here you can dine in an elegant and romantic setting, and enjoy the views of the harbour. The menu at Luciano?s includes traditional Italian favourites such as veal marsala, eggplant Parmigiana and osso bucco, as well as seafood, steaks and a variety of pasta dishes.

Another upscale option at Cable Beach is Indigo Cafe, featuring a modern menu of fusion cuisine, including sushi, seafood, innovative salads and meat dishes.

Oriental dining comes in a wide variety of choices. A huge selection of Chinese dishes can be found at Double Dragon's three locations. The menu here goes on forever and includes the classics and Bahamian versions of Chinese dishes featuring conch and local fish. East Villa on East Bay Street offers Chinese and Continental dining and the Asia Buffet in the Island Traders Building is the only Asian buffet in Nassau.

For a taste of India, step into the Clay Oven on West Bay Street, just across from the parking lot of the British Colonial hotel. Here you can dine on traditional East Indian dishes, as well as some with a Bahamian twist.

And for a taste of good-old American fare, The Hard Rock Cafe on Charlotte Street north offers music, ambience and a trip back through time. For more American-style dining, check out Friday's Soon Come, right on the harbour on East Bay Street. The extensive menu even features a few Bahamian-inspired choices.
