Dine out tonight

DINING & ENTERTAINMENT GUIDE - JULY 2004

Dine out tonight

Delicious reasons to leave your hotel

Here?s why you should get out and explore all the culinary offerings of New Providence and Paradise Island: fresh fish ? just plucked from the sea, innovative food combinations, atmosphere galore, exotic foreign and native dishes, ocean views, soft dinner music, lively entertainment, top chefs, fresh local ingredients? the list goes on and on.

The very freshest seafood can be found at Nassau?s top restaurants. Just step into the Poop Deck on East Bay Street, and you?re faced with a display of just-caught fish from which to choose your dinner. It just doesn?t get any fresher than this.

You might also want to sample the ample Bahamian fare at The Poop Deck at Sandyport or before the native show at the King & Knights at Cable Beach and The Blue Marlin on Paradise Island. You can enjoy more Bahamian and American food and outdoor ambience at Travellers? Rest out west, or at Sailor?s Choice and the ever-popular Crocodile?s, both right on the harbour. For real down-home native fare, try Goldie?s, Seafood Haven and Twin Brothers, at Arawak Cay. Twin Brothers also has outlets on Parliament Street and on Boyd Road. Seafood Haven has a second location on Bay Street in the Moses Plaza.

The Shoal on Nassau Street, Goombay Mama in the Wyndham Nassau, Conch Fritters on Marlborough Street and Café Johnny Canoe at the Nassau Beach Hotel are also among dining spots featuring authentic hometown cuisine. Iguana Cafe mixes Greek with Bahamian choices.

Upscale Bahamian cuisine along with Continental dishes are served at Buena Vista, Blue Lagoon Seafood Restaurant, Columbus Tavern and Montagu Gardens.

Broader Caribbean goodies are available at Anthony?s Caribbean Grill on Paradise Island, and Compass Point Restaurant on the ocean just east of Love Beach.

Dine around the world

Once you?ve had your fill of fresh Bahamian seafood, and authentic native dishes, you may wish to do a bit of exploring. Many of the ethnic restaurants on the islands have been favourites for years. You can literally dine around the world on Paradise Island and New Providence.

For a taste of ?down under,? visit the Outback Steakhouse in the Island Traders Building on East Bay Street, where upside-down maps, boomerangs and flags tell you that you?re not in Nassau anymore. If you?re in the mood for a steak, Victoria?s filet is just the ticket. Thick and juicy and served with salad and your choice of side dish, it?s a carnivore?s dream. Save room for Chocolate Thunder from Down Under, Cinnamon Oblivion, or another rich and sinful dessert.
For classic French and Continental dining, Graycliff, Provence Restaurant & Tapas Bar, Sun and? and Chez Willie exude European ambience. If you?re looking for romance, any of these four upscale restaurants can provide it. You can dine in a romantic courtyard or around a pool, overlooking a canal or in old-world splendour. And the food is first rate.

A taste of Italy

If your palate craves Italian, the choices are broad. Café Matisse on Bank Lane has long been a favourite spot of both visitors and locals craving authentic Italian cuisine. Home-made pasta, delicious seafood and sophisticated meat dishes, including rack of lamb, round out an extensive menu. Save room for the tiramisu.

Other established Italian restaurants include Capriccio Ristorante at Cable Beach and Ristorante Villaggio at Caves Village, with ambience to spare. Sole Mare in the Wyndham Nassau Resort at Cable Beach serves authentic Italian food by candlelight and Island Pasta Market in the El Greco Hotel on West Bay Street is the new hot spot for top notch Italian cuisine. Here you can dine in a rustic, yet elegant, setting, and enjoy the views of the harbour across the street or the activity in the open kitchen. The menu offers pasta, seafood, poultry and meats, including a mouth-watering stuffed pork tenderloin with garlic mashed potatoes that will have you coming back for more.

For Mexican fare, Señor Frog?s on the waterfront behind the British Colonial Hilton is a hot spot for spicy food and spicier entertainment. Not a place for a quiet dinner for two, Señor Frog?s gets livelier as the night wears on. You?ll have plenty of opportunity to burn off the tacos, burritos and chimichangas with dancing, games and contests.

Asian experience

Oriental dining comes in a wide variety of choices. A huge selection of Chinese dishes can be found at the Double Dragon?s three locations. The menu here goes on forever and includes the classics and Bahamian versions of Chinese dishes featuring conch and local fish. East Villa on East Bay Street offers Chinese and Continental dining and the Asia Buffet in the Island Traders Building is the only Asian buffet in Nassau. For a full range of Japanese sushi dishes as well as steak and seafood, Ichiban Sushi Steak & Seafood Restaurant in the Nassau Harbour Club is a great choice. The theme here is boats ? from sushi boats to the view of boats in the harbour.

For fun dining experiences, The Green Parrot at Hurricane Hole on Paradise Island offers breezy dining and a view of the harbour action, while the Hard Rock Cafe on Charlotte Street north offers music, ambience and a trip back through time. Both feature casual dining and American-type dishes.
