Nassau's golf explosion

WHAT-TO-DO - NASSAU, CABLE BEACH & PARADISE ISLAND - JULY 2005

Nassau's golf explosion

Many new courses planned

While other islands have taken the spotlight in recent years, New Providence is now getting set to regain its title as the golfing capital of The Bahamas.

No fewer than four new courses are taking shape in New Providence, at least in the minds of developers, even if design drawings and specifications have not yet been drawn up.

If all those plans come to fruition, there could be seven or eight courses in New Providence in a few years' time, compared to four courses today, including the South Ocean Beach course that is now closed for repairs.

Seventy-six years ago, New Providence was the only island in The Bahamas with a golf course. Now known as the Cable Beach golf course, the classy Emmet Devereux track opened in 1929. Cable Beach has undergone many changes over the years but now, with a billion-dollar-plus redevelopment of the entire Cable Beach area planned by the Baha Mar group, there will be two courses, not one, opposite the completely redesigned strip.

Tiger Woods design
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Perry Christie stunned the local golfing community in April 2005 when he suggested that there is a "strong possibility" that PGA star Tiger Woods may choose The Bahamas as the site for his first golf course.

The specific location would be within a proposed gated community on what was, until recently, a private estate in south-western New Providence.

Christie added that another PGA star, Greg Norman, might be involved in redesigning or creating a new course at South Ocean, also in south-western New Providence.

The fourth new course is a links-type 18 holer, to be built by Kerzner International on Athol Island, just to the east of Paradise Island. This green-fee course will be part of the ongoing billion-dollar Phase III development of Kerzner's spectacular Atlantis property, which already includes the Ocean Club golf course on Paradise Island.
