Two spectacular new courses, one designed and built by PGA star Ernie Els and the other in the early stages of construction by golfing legend Jack Nicklaus, will establish New Providence as a world-class destination for golfers.
Els’s course at the exclusive Albany resort at the western end of the island is as unusual as it is dramatic. It features five par fives–ranging from 548 to 603 yards from the championship tees–and five par threes–similarly long from 184 to 216 yards, obviously designed for a professional golf tournament. But the 7,379-yard monster is reduced to 6,043 yards for weekend players and 5,341 yards from the closest tees.
Not much was known at press time about the Nicklaus design, except that it will be an 18-hole, Jack Nicklaus Signature Course, which is the highest tier of his company’s offerings. It will be a key component of the huge Baha Mar redevelopment of the Cable Beach area.
For a few months, avid golfers can play what used to be the back nine holes of the venerable Cable Beach Golf Course.
This is a challenging test with fairways and greens that call for precision, rather than length, off the tee. There is water on eight of the nine holes, waiting to gobble up errant shots. These holes are all that remain of the oldest golf course in The Bahamas, originally designed in 1928 by Devereux Emmett, a well-known designer in his day.
Another golfing venue open to all golfers is an attractive driving range, including large putting and chipping areas in the Queen Elizabeth Sports Centre. This area, operated by the Bahamas Golf Federation, also includes a par-three course, partly playable but still under construction at press time.
